Business Strategy

The default function of marketing is to build margins and drive profit for an organisation. Therefore there is an alignment of marketing to the business strategy. Instead of marketing being seen as a cost of business, this alignment of objectives and proof of ROI against those business objectives repositions marketing as a business investment rather than a cost.

In Harvard Business Review July – August 2005 an article titled “Turning Great Strategy into Great Performance” by Mankins and Steel, reported that companies only realised 60% of their strategy potential due to a failure in implementation.

There is no evidence that this same trend does not also occur in the implementation of the marketing plan and perhaps the lesson on how to close the gap in strategy and performance for business can be applied to the business of marketing.

The fundamental difference between the marketing process and business process is that implementation of business strategy is largely focused on aligning internal teams, while marketing strategy alignment will involve stakeholder groups that are both internal and external in the form of suppliers.

We have seen examples where marketing has been incredibly effective in aligning the marketing process to the marketing objectives, but the concept of aligning marketing to the business objectives requires any core changes in philosophy and behaviour.

The seven rules proposed by Mankins and Steele are:

  1. Keep the objectives simple and make them concrete
  2. Debate and challenge assumptions, not the forecasts
  3. Use a rigorous framework and speak a common language
  4. Discuss resource deployment early
  5. Clearly identify priorities
  6. Continually monitor performance
  7. Reward and develop executional abilities

A key consideration in achieving business strategy alignment for marketing strategy development and implementation, is having all of the stakeholder groups and suppliers aligned and measured against the same set of simple, concrete metrics (1, 6).

Develop a common language and framework for the development and implementation across all stakeholders and suppliers (3)

Ensure that the resources available are sufficient for the task and that they are applied against the high priority tasks (4, 5)

And possibly the greatest shift is to move the compensation model from a cost and resource based model to one that recognises and rewards the delivery of the common objectives. (7)

By aligning all of the stakeholder groups, including the external suppliers such as agencies to be rewarded for the agreed business objectives you achieve a total business strategy alignment and improved performance through the realisation of that strategy in marketing.

Marketing Tips For Small Business Owners

Maybe you’ve heard these different marketing terms, maybe you haven’t. Either way, let me help to clarify the difference between them, because you should have all three if you want to market successfully. And knowing what they are may be your first step to accomplishing all three for your business.

Unique Selling Proposition

A unique selling proposition, sometimes referred to as a USP, is the one thing that is unique and valuable about your business, product or service? And it must be unique and valuable to your prospects or ideal clients, not just to you.

It may be an inherent attribute of your product or service (it’s the only blue widget available and blue is the color your ideal customers prefer) or it may be something you create. I created the USP for my business, 10stepmarketing.

There are many marketing training programs and educational products available. But there were none I could find that taught small business owners how to create and implement their own marketing plan using a simple, step-by-step, question-and-answer method.

So I created my marketing training program (name and all) to fill this void in the marketplace. And it became my “created” USP. It did not exist when I first started training 5 years ago – I created it and built my business around it.

Your USP is an idea or a concept. It is not the exact words you feature in your marketing. You will however use it to write and create your marketing messages.

Single Message

This is what you say about your business, product or service when you market. It is the one key idea or message you include in all of your marketing. It may be very closely related to your USP, but it may not be exactly the same.

You will determine your single message AFTER you determine your USP. Additionally, look at your single message as the one thing you could tell your prospects to change their mindset about your product or service, from what they currently think to what you WANT them to think.

It is usually written in the form of a short statement or sentence. Its job is to take your prospects from what they think now to what you want them to think. Most likely you will NOT feature your single message in your marketing materials exactly as you have written it in your marketing plan.

The idea will be communicated, but you will very likely use different words in your actual marketing materials. For 10stepmarketing, my single message is “If you can answer 10 questions, you can successfully market your business. ” (In my case, I turned my single message into a tagline because it was succinct, it communicated exactly what I wanted, and frankly, it just WORKED!)

Tagline

Your tagline is an actual line of marketing copy you write to sum up what you do, or what you want your prospects to know about your product or service, or a key benefit they will reap if they purchase. You will draw on your USP and your Single Message to help you craft your tagline.

This is the only one of all three (USP, Single Message, Tagline) your prospects will see exactly as you have written it in your marketing plan. As stated above, my tagline for 10stepmarketing came directly from my single message. This is not usually the case, but it just happened to work out that way.

You may have the same situation. Your USP or your Single Message may be so spot-on you choose to use it as your tagline. As long as your tagline communicates a customer-focused message that’s great.

Always ask yourself the question “What’s so great about that?” when you are thinking of putting a tagline or any other message or copy in front of your prospects. If “what’s so great” is obvious, your copy or tagline is probably already very customer-focused.

If you can further drill down to a more specific customer benefit when asking this question, then you are still in business-owner “feature-land” and you will want to keep asking “What’s so great about that?” until you cannot drill down any further.

Small Business Marketing Strategy

Are you realizing that you need any help driving sales for your business? It can be very difficult when you know that you need to boost your sales, but you aren’t sure what you are doing wrong. If you have an online business, but you promote it online and offline, you may be making any crucial mistakes that are costing you big money. Finding the best Internet marketing strategy can be difficult, and many times you need to scratch your own plans and turn to the professionals. Even when you know you need professional help, it can be difficult to determine which professional or which course is right for you.

There are any things you can look for when you are searching for the right course or professional to help you out. First, you want the person to be straightforward about who they are and the program or course they have created. You should be given at least a bit of background information about this person so you can judge for yourself if theirs is actually the best Internet marketing strategy for you. From this information you can at least get a feel for what you will be working with if you decide to go ahead and purchase the lesson or the course.

The next thing you can look for is any basic information about what the course focuses on. If you have an online business, you probably want something that is going to focus on content, as content is the place where many people really need any help. The problem with content is that so many of us forget how important it is to have content that asks the visitor to take action, essentially closing the sale. You can do a lot of work to get people to visit your website, but if they aren’t greeted with the right content you will find it difficult to boost your sales no matter how many people visit. The best Internet marketing strategy will focus on content, and this is probably where you need the most help, and that is why it is so important!

The right course for you will also be affordable. There are many courses that cost thousands of dollars or simply seem too excessive for the information that they provide. If you aren’t comfortable with the price of the course, than you should pass on it of course. You always get what you pay for, but you don’t have to get ripped off to get the best information.

A website that may hold the best Internet marketing strategy is http://www. poweryoursales. com. This website has a very affordable course that focuses on content, but also has many bonuses that will give you plenty of information to help you boost your sales. If you are looking for all of the answers that pertain to promoting or advertising your business, this may very well be the best course for you to purchase. Just in case you aren’t sure, you will be happy to know that the course comes with a 12 month guarantee. If you aren’t satisfied, you get your money back. Why not give this website a visit, as you have nothing to lose!

Home Based Small Business

If you are considering starting a Canadian Women Home Based Business then you will need to understand the basics of starting your business, including the GST, HST, and PST. There are some things you need to do to prepare yourself for starting your Canadian women home based business. In Canada, there are some specific sales tax items that you need to make sure you grasp, too.

Hopefully by now you know what type of Canadian women home based business to run. If not, then take some time out now to develop your ideas. Go over what things you enjoy and how you can turn those things into a business. Then discover what opportunities or niches you can fill with your ideas.

As you build your Canadian women home based business from the ground up, you will want to come up with an effective business name along with a business plan. You will want your business name to be memorable and simple. A “cutesy” name may be fun at first, but ask yourself if it will be cute years down the road. Also figure out what type of Canadian women home based business you will want to start so that you can register your business and business name within your province. Also, in many areas you will need to obtain a business license, so check with your municipality.

Another item you will need to obtain is a business number. It may not be something you need right away for your Canadian women home based business, but it is something that you will need later. The business number for your Canadian women home based business is assigned when you register to do business with the Canadian Revenue Agency, or CRA.

You will need to obtain a business number if you register for the GST/HST or if you file corporate income tax. Do your research on the GST/HST, because you may discover that your Canadian women home based business is considered a “Small Supplier,” which makes you exempt from having to work with the tax. Even if you do decide to register, you will need to take some time to make sure you understand how the GST and HST work. Besides the GST/HST, you may also need to register your Canadian women home based business as a collector of PST (provincial sales tax). You can usually find information from your province about how the PST works and how to collect it.

Insurance is another consideration for your Canadian women home based business. You may want to consider obtaining a business insurance policy to protect your business assets from incidents that may occur. Make sure, though, that you consider your different options regarding business insurance for Canadian women home based business and do your research so that you save money on your business insurance.

Great Small Business Ideas

If you’re serious about wanting to start a business, the first thing you want to do is take the time to understand what really makes you tick. Where do you get your drive? What gets you in a “zone?”

However, there’s a lot more to figuring out the BEST business idea that will make you more money and give you more freedom to enjoy more success in your life.

And success to you may be different than success to someone else. It may not be all about money at all. It may not be about finding something you are completely passionate about. It may not be about having a “cool” business — the latest fad or a unique niche.

Success is how you define it.

Finding the right idea to bring you that success takes a willingness to be patient, good timing, and a lot of research.

And there’s nothing wrong with taking your time, being careful trying to figure out which small business ideas are best.

If you rush this process, you’re bound to come up with a business that doesn’t excite you at all.

You’ll be bored.

You will not reach goals and it will become like a job . . . maybe even harder!

You’ll feel like you would working for someone else. (You don’t want that again, do you?)

First, Figure Out What You Really Want

Starting off, you really have to force yourself to relax. I know what it’s like being very, very unhappy at a job. And I can tell you from first-hand experience that walking away from a well-paying job and jumping into your own business is stressful.

But if you carefully plan your “escape,” it will make it that much better!

Set Your Short-Term Goals

Maybe you want to make a ton of money and drive around in a BMW.

Or maybe you just want the freedom to enjoy your family or friends. Or perhaps it’s just a matter of being in control of your life — being able to do whatever you want, whenever you want.

Whatever your long-term goals are, first you have to concentrate on the shorter term goals before you can begin to see that “big picture. “

It is up to you.

But understand that the type of business you start will play a roll in whether or not you meet your goals — both short and long-term.

If you’re trying to startup a part-time venture while working full-time for someone else, you’re going to have to set daily goals to try and squeeze in a few hours of work every day, often before and after work! (I used to get up at 4:30 in the morning, go to my full-time job at 8:30, come home at 5 or 6 and get right back to work on my new business . . . and I loved it!)

But if it’s a small business idea you came up with on the ride home and it doesn’t really “drive” you, it’ll make reaching your short term goals — often the hard part — a heck of a lot more difficult.

What are Your Long-Term Plans?

That big picture includes, more than anything, something you can see yourself doing every day. Something that — even on weekends — you love to do.

And even though it is something you love to do, make sure it will feed your long-term plan. And you will not know that until you know what your long term plan actually is!

For instance, if your plan is indeed to make a lot of money and retire at a young age, you’ll obviously have to look at small business ideas that are highly profitable.

This would include mostly business-to-business models. There is commonly more profit selling to businesses (a product or service) unless you make it big in the consumer market.

Why would the business-to-business market be more profitable? Because a business would be more willing to invest in a product or service (that may even be a write-off) versus the consumer market which is more “luxury” driven. Meaning, consumers base a lot of their buying decisions on want instead of needs.

It is also a financial issue.

A larger business can pay a $300 invoice without thinking about it whereas a consumer getting a $300 bill may sweat a little more.

This is just an example of understanding your long-term goals so you can look closer at a finite number of business ideas to get you closer to where you want to be.

And if you go ahead and hang your “open for business” sign and then realize, “Oh, I cannot make that much money doing this!”, you’ll only be taking one step forward and two steps back.

Grab a Pad . . . Ideas Will Come and Go

Because — like all entrepreneurs — you’re a thinker, you’ve always got ideas popping into your head. Probably more than you can handle (the brain only has so much room, right?).

That’s why you should always keep a notebook by your side.

Sure, any of the best ideas get written on a cocktail napkin. But you’re better off trying to give these ideas more permanence. And having a notebook dedicated to your small business ideas will give you a growing and buildable “diary” to use when you’re good and ready to go for it!

And once you start putting your ideas in writing, you’ll find yourself getting into the habit of using your notebook more and more. It is like anything else that takes practice.

The more you do it, the better you get at finding the best small business ideas. And each idea will help you grow more specific or “niche” ideas.

Become a Private Investigator!

What you want to do is really learn how to research. You’ve got to dig — and dig deep — to determine what business really could work best for your success.

Not only do you have to know who you are and what’s going to drive your personality the most, but you also need to think about what sells.

What type of business can be profitable?

Too many people make the mistake of looking at only one aspect of starting a small business. If you love parakeets and you’re passionate about them, it doesn’t mean you’ll be able to open up a store in your town without knowing if anyone else likes them!

As a side note, starting an internet business allows you a greater opportunity to build a business around something you’re passionate about. If it’s parakeets you love, you’ll find more people on the internet with your same passion than you would in your own backyard. For any great information about finding your passion on the internet, click here

You research should include looking at what other businesses are doing (successfully and not so successfully) in your city or town.

Look at small businesses and even what the “big guys” are doing.

Maybe you could create a smaller business with a personal touch that the “big guys” are commonly missing out on (no matter how hard they try. )

Figure out more about what makes you tick . . .

What kind of hobbies do you have, if any?

What kind of magazines do you enjoy?

What do you like to do most in your “free” time?

What was the best job you ever held? Even if it’s one you had when you were a kid, you may find a business in something you know and love — but don’t even realize it yet!

Business Ideas Are Everywhere

Start to think about needs in your town or city. Could there be something missing? Could there be a need or a product or any type of service people would use that they “want?”

What is the majority age population in your city or town? Is it mostly seniors? (a huge market because they are more active and living longer than ever. ) Or is your community made up of younger families?

Check out the local sections in your paper. Read the Lifestyle and Arts section. (I always find articles about local business people who have started businesses. )

Look at local and state businesses. Look at consumer trends and what people “want. “

Could there be something other businesses in your area need? Don’t be afraid to go around and ask!

Think about concerns we all have in the world today.

There are so many opportunities out there, waiting for like you to step up and get started with a new business!

Don’t be afraid to ask!

This is where your friends, family and neighbors come in. Ask them to give you their number-one need. A product or service that’s “hard-to-find. ” A complaint about what’s missing from their lives.

How many times have you looked for something — a product or service — and had to travel a long distance to get it?

Answering questions will give you plenty to think about and any good material for your notebook.

And if you’re interested in the business-to-business market, you could always put together a survey and mail it out to local businesses. Give them an incentive (a low-cost, high value gift) and find out what they really need to help them improve their business.

You may find that all of the local businesses in your area need someone to take care of local deliveries. Or someone to help them type or use their computer more effectively. .

Just remember, starting a small business is a process and it takes time. The more planning and research you do up front, the better chance you’ll have to success and have a little bit of fun, too.

Small Business Banking

An expert has offered some business banking advice.

Taking the time to properly compare savings on the best business account products available in the UK may be crucial for anyone considering the possibility of setting up their own company in 2011, it has been suggested.

Cathryn Hayes, head of franchising at HSBC, told the Daily Mirror that professional financial help is also often needed for start-up firms when it comes to business banking, as while managing an organisation may be a “long cherished dream”, it can also be “a frightening step to take”.

Ms Hayes advised that there are a number of costs that need to be analysed prior to establishing a business, such as “premises and professional charges, as well as insurance”.

She added that an extensive business plan is also “vital” in order to secure finance from a bank or building society.

This comes after Huw Morgan, head of business banking at HSBC UK, told the same news source that owners of smaller companies need to keep their personal finances separate from those of their business.

Meanwhile, Credit card fraud can be reduced, according to one expert.

Credit card holders must work alongside companies and regulators in order to combat fraud across the country.

That is the view of Mark Bowerman, spokesman for the UK Cards Association, whoever believes that a “joined-up approach” involving collaboration between businesses, consumers and the relevant authorities is the most effective way in which to go about tackling this issue.

Mr Bowerman was speaking following the publication of a report by KPMG earlier this week (January 10th 2011), which stated that the number of financial fraud cases put in front of courts in the UK reached record levels during 2010 – which may encourage people to use other methods of payment, such as a current account or savings account.

Indeed, some 42 per cent of such cases were ironed out by the use of the public purse.

However, the expert insisted that despite these findings, “debit and credit card fraud losses fell in the first half of the year”.

Advice For Business Owners

If you just started a small business or are thinking about it you know that there are books and books of advice out there. While some advice can be helpful too much can be overwhelming and can make you turn away completely. Still, it’s always a good idea to listen to the wisdom of those who went before and have learned the hard way so you don’t have to. Here are the top tips for small businesses.

Use a business plan. Start by writing a detailed business plan that you can use throughout your startup and beyond. The plan should include a statement of purpose or mission statement, which can help to guide you not only on startup but also all through the business. The plan also needs to detail the finances of the business.

The finances of the business include all the expenses for the business along with the projected sales. Overheads such as rent, utilities and postage charges must all be considered as well as other key budget items such as advertising. Don’t forget about one-time fees for business startup, licenses and inspections.

Another cost for all businesses is the monthly telephone charges.

Don’t skimp on insurance. Always get the full insurance coverage that you can get, even if the costs are slightly higher each month. This can help tremendously in keeping you covered for all types of events. Many small businesses have been wiped out entirely due to an accident or problem that was not covered by insurance.

Then you will need to figure out the actual material costs for your product or service. This should include any labor necessary. Don’t assume that your labor is free. This is a mistake many new small business owners make. Instead, be sure that you account for your own salary as well as the salary of any other employees that will be required.

Once you have the costs figured out you can set your pricing accordingly. Be prepared to do some market research. Always check competitors pricing to ensure that you are in line. You don’t want to be priced too high so that nobody will purchase your product or service. Likewise, you cannot be priced so low that you lose money with each purchase. Instead, take all things into consideration and price your product or service realistically while allowing for some profit.

Try to be prudent when it comes to the overheads for your business. For example, telephone service is one area that you may be able to lower the costs. There are many wholesale long distance providers where you can find good service with reasonable prices.

When making the budget always allow a category for unexpected items. These may come in the form of unexpected repairs or charges that you did not plan on. If you did not budget for these types of expenses the money will come right off the bottom line – profits. Instead, figure these expenses into the budget. Carry them over from month to month so that you have enough in the fund in the case of a problem. This also allows you some room for pricing changes in the event that some of your raw materials or labor prices go up.

A good business plan can get you some much-needed dollars for your business. Investors must see a business plan before they will invest money in your business. Yet investors can provide the money you need to get the business going. Banks and loan officers also must review a business plan before granting a small business loan.

If you are unsure about how to write a business plan get some help. A professional can help write a great plan for you and may be well worth the initial expense. Look at other business plans for similar businesses to get an idea of what it should be like. Finally, you can tweak the business plan as needed. Use the business plan as a roadmap to the success of your business.
